Adobe Reader: Removing “Please wait while the document is being prepared for reading” Message in Adobe Reader 9

If you are like me, the “Please wait while the document is being prepared for reading” message that pops up every time you use Adobe Acrobat Reader is seriously annoying. You twiddle your thumbs while waiting for what feels like forever. Well guess what, you dont have to put up with it any longer. Hooray!

All you have to is change a quick setting:

  1. Open Acrobat Reader and hit Ctrl+K (or Select “Edit” then “Preferences” from the drop-down menu)
  2. Click on the “Reading” tab under the “Categories” column on the left.
  3. Select the “Screen Reader Options” section, select the “Only read the currently visible pages” option from the dropdown menu.
  4. Click “OK”.

Thanks to ZeroHacks for pointing me in the right direction. You are a lifesaver, several seconds at a time.

Alternatively, you can just remove the Accessibility.api file. Be Aware: This will prevent the Screen Reader from running at all. But it may also ‘break’ your ability to access your preferences page.

The file you need to move or delete is called “Accessibility.api”. In my installation of Adobe Acrobat 9.0 for Windows, this file is located in “Program Files” -> “Adobe” -> “Acrobat 9.0″ -> “Acrobat” -> “plug-ins”. You can always run a search for “Accessibility.api” if you cant locate the right folder on your installation. Once you have found the “Accessibility.api” file, just delete it or move it. I tend towards the safe side, so if I was using this solution (which I’m not, I use the first solution), I would put the file in a subfolder called “Accessibility.api_Hidden_Here”. That way I could find the file if I ever need it, which is doubtful.

Thanks to HowToGeek for sharing this solution option.
